Less than two weeks after the start of the Gettysburg Campaign, Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry successfully screened the Confederate infantry as it marched north behind the sheltering Blue Ridge Mountains. The Union Cavalry Corps commander, Brig. Gen.
