"Odard of Dutton, nephew of Hugh Lupus. He was directly descended from William, Earl of Eu, who married a niece of William the Conqueror".

Was a kinsman of Hugh Lupas, Earl of Chester. Odard was rewarded (at the Conquest [1066]???) with the manor of Dutton, and his descendants used Dutton as their surname.

Documented lineage of the Dutton surname Vol I, p 236, "Old histories relate that when Hugh-le-Loup was installed, with his title of earl, in the county of Chester, he sent to Normandy for one of his old friends, called (Nigel or Lenoir), which Lenoir brought with him five brothers, Houdard, Edward, Volmere, Horswyne, Wolfaith. "Houdard, the elder of the five brothers, was to Lenoir much the same that the latter was to earl Hugh; he was hereditary seneschal of the constablery of Halton. Lenoir, his lord gave him for his service and homage, the lands of Weston and Ashton., "

William Richard Cutter wrote in "Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts," New York: Lewis Historical Publishing, 1908, Vol I pgs. 249-250. "The family of Dutton or Dunton takes its name from the ancient town of Dutotn, England, mentioned thrice in Domesday Book One part of this town was held by Odard, or Udard, also spelled Hodard and Hudard. After Hodard received his grant from the Earl of Chester, his descendants added the name of the town to their Christian names, as John de Dutton. The family has borne a coat-of-arms, from the earliest days, and from 1060 to the present time has ranked among the leading noble families of Great Britain.
"(1) Hodard, the progenitor of the family in England, came from Normandy in 1066 with William the Conqueror. In the distribution of the conquered lands he received a good part of the town of Dutton, in Cheshire, and settled there. This grant came from Hugh Lupus, formerly Earl of Avranches, later
Earl of Chester. The sister of Hugh Lupus married William of Normandy. One authority makes Hodard a nephew of Hugh Lupus, and therefore a nephew by marriage to the King. Hodard had five brothers--Edard, Wolmere, Horswyne, Wolfarth and Nigell. Hodard held Aston under William Fitz-Nigell, Baron of Halton. Hodard was Lord of Dutton; according to the family record in 1665
his land was then in the custody of his lineal descendant, Lady Elinor Vicomptess Kilmorey, daughter of Thomas Dutton, and had been treasured the same for some six centuries, in the possession of the direct heirs of Dutton."

I find this town of Dutton, thrice named in Doomsday-book, as held then in the Conqueror's time by three persons. One Part Odard held immediately of the Earl of Chester, as it were in Capite: Another Part was held by William Fitz-Nigell, Baron of Halton, of the Earl, in like Manner: Another Part did Osberne Son of Tezzon, Ancestor to the Boydells of Dodleston, hold also of the Earl of Chester. Odard's Part seems to be the greatest Part, which one Ravene held before at the coming in of the Normans.

I. Odard, or Udard, sometimes also written Hodard and Hudard, came into England with William the Conqueror, and seated himself at Dutton; a good part whereof Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester, gave unto him as before you have heard out of Doomsday-book. The ancient Roll of the Barons of Halton saith that with Hugh, Earl of Chester, came one Nigell, a nobleman; and with Nigell came five brethren, to wit: Hudard, Edard, Wolmere, Horswyne, and Wolfaith, a Priest, to whom Nigell gave the Church of Runcorne; and unto Hudard, the same Nigell gave Weston and Great Aston, (now divided into two Townships, Aston Grange and Aston juxta Sutton,) pro uno Feodo Militis [for a ? military service]; and from this Hudard came all the Duttons. And in the Record of Doomsday, Odard held Aston under William Fitz-Nigell, Baron of Halton; and also Odard and Brictric held Weston under
the said William, Anno Domini 1086. Whether those five Brethren aforenamed, were Brethren to Nigell, is a doubt; for then methinks he should have said Quinque Fratres sui: whereas he says onely, cum isto Nigello Venerunt quinque Fratres, and so names them."
