"PFC Wilburn McKay Is Killed In Action

Pfc. Wilburn D McKay of Cameron has been killed in action in France a War Department communication received here disclosed.

Pfc. McKay was killed in action on June 12, 1944. Notification came to Mrs. Minnie Baker, his mother, in Cameron.

Pfc. McKay was born near Cameron on January 13, 1920, and was 24 years old. He was a volunteer, and at the time he entered service he was at Conroe. After his training period was over he arrived in England December 29, 1942.

Mrs. Baker has received the Purple Heart, awarded posthumously for his gallantry.

Another son, Cpl. Lilburn L. McKay, took part in the invasion of the Marshall IIslands in the Pacific, and is now on the Island of Saipan.

"Reburial Rites for Wilburn Dennis McKay Will Be Friday
-Cameron, Nov. 16

The body of PFC Wilburn Dennis McKay, World War II veteran, will arrive in Cameron Thursday, Nov. 18.

Funeral services will be held from the chapel of the Green funeral home on Friday, the hour to be announced. The body will remain in the funeral home until Friday.

Rev. Hall, minister at First Presbyterian Church, will conduct the services and burial will be in the Rice Cemetery. A military ritual will be carried out in the burial arrangements

PFC McKay is the son of Mrs. Minnie Baker of Cameron. He entered service May 9, 1942 at the age of 24, and served with Company E, 175th Infantry Regiment, and was killed in action in France on June 12, 1944.

In a letter from the War Department, Mrs. Baker learned that her son was buried in the U.S. military cemetery at La Cambe,* France, 17 miles north of St. Lo.

Surviving are his mother, and two brothers, Lilburn McKay and Cecil Baker."

According to Lilburn's death certificate their parents were:
Thomas Henderson McKay, born about 1889, and Minnie Mae Condray, born in 1895--both in Texas.

*La Cambe was originally the site of a battlefield cemetery, established by the U.S. Army Graves Registration Service during the war. After the war ended, work began on exhuming the American remains and transferring them in accordance with the wishes of their families. Beginning in 1945, the Americans transferred two-thirds of their fallen from this site back to the United States.
