Henry was born and raised in Oakland, Indiana. Grew up on a farm and hunting was his main hobby. He enlisted in the service in 1941 and attended basic training and gunnery school where he received the expert marksman badge.

Henry was assigned to the 91st Bomb Group 323rd Squardron while in Walla Walla, Washington and joined Lt. George Birdsong's crew as Tail-Gunner on the B-17 "Delta Rebel No. 2" (#42-5077).

Henry was stationed in Bassingbourn, England and flew several missions with Lt. Birdsong's crew and was accredited with successfully shooting down enemy fighters.

On March 17, 1943 S/Sgt. Henry A. Carter, Jr. was run over by an automobile near Baldock, England and killed. On April 3, 1943 S/Sgt. Carter was awarded the Air Medal posthumously.
