John Edward Kretzer, Sr. of Dothan died Monday morning, June 16, 2003 at his residence. He was 80.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 19 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with full military honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Kretzer was born June 20, 1922 in Eastern Kentucky and lived the early years of his life in Vanlear, KY.

He joined the Army Air Corp and later transferred to the Air Force where he served in World War II and Korea. He retired as master sergeant in 1965 after 21 years of military service. Mr. Kretzer was then employed with Hayes Aircraft for 20 years prior to his retirement in 1986.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Kretzer of Dothan; a son, John Edward Kretzer, Jr., and his wife, Pamela Ann, of Collierville, Tenn., a daughter, Cheryl Ann McDuffie and her husband, Gene, of Dothan; six grandchildren, John Kretzer, III, Garrett West, Andy McDuffie, Holly McDuffie, Angela Simpson and Spril Simpson; two brothers, Delbert Kretzer and Earl Kretzer; two sisters, Ellen McKnight and Ann Renfro; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Dawn and Joe, Brittany, Beth and Nicole.
