Artemas, born 20 Dec 1847 in Ohio, was a son of Francis and Electa (Chapman) Penfield. Father and son were both in the same unit until Artemas was transferred to Co. F. 16 IL INF. The Penfield family is found in Newtown Township, Livingston County, Illinois in the 1860 census.

Artemas married Mary Ann Speise 2 July 1868 in Livingston County, IL and is in Livingston County in 1870, listed as 23, married and living in Pontiac with his wife Mary 19. In the 1880 census they are found in Streator, LaSalle County, IL with daughters Bertha, Maude, and Ora. The next family listed is his mother Electra 63 with her married daughter and son-in law. In the 1900 census Artemus is in living on Maple Street in Fairbury, IL with his wife Mary (who says she is the mother of 8, 4 of whom are living) and children Ora b. Jan 1881 (has to be 1880 as she is in the 1880 census), Ollie b. March 1882, and Earl b. Oct 1887. Artemis died 11 Aug 1905 in Fairbury, IL and is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Fairbury, Livingston County, IL. His widow Mary is listed in Fairbury in the 1910 census with son Earl.
