From the Revolutionary War Pension of Randolph Lucas:

State of Alabama Dale County:

On this first day of February 1834 personally appeared in open Court, before William Harper Judge of the County Court of the County and State aforesaid now sitting Randolph Lucas a resident of said County and State aforesaid aged seventy-five years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832.

That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers, and served as herein stated. I was drafted for three months under the command of Colonel [William] Hill, General Win[n], Major Harrison Captain Shannon was my Captain after the expiration of the three months I volunteered under the command of the aforesaid officers. I was at the "Battle of Mobley's Meeting House", marched from thence to Tiger [Tyger] River, from thence to Black Stock’s Battle on said River. I was engaged in said Battle, I was engaged in the "Battle at the Cowpens". I was in the **Battle at the Rocky Mount **on [the] Waterree River above Camden. I was in the Battle at Winnsborough, I was also engaged in the Eutaw [Springs] Battle; I reside in the State of South Carolina Camden District and performed my service in that State; I was engaged in the Revolutionary War four years and six months.

I am wholly unable to state the day and month and year when I entered the service at the time when I left the same by reason of old age, and the consequent loss of memory, I served the four years and six months as stated above; and at the expiration of the term of service received a discharge had the misfortune to get it burnt in my Father's House. I know of no person whose testimony I can procure, who can testify to my service except by Brother John Lucas all have deceased or moved beyond my knowledge. I served with an embodied corps and called into service by competent authority; I was either in the field or in Garrison; and for the time during which the service was performed I was not employed in any civil pursuit, and for such service I claim a pension. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State.

Q 1st Where and in what year were you born?

A. 1.** I was born in the edge of North Carolina; in the year 1759**.

Q 2nd Have you any record of your age and if so where is it?

A. 2. I have no record of my age. For it was burnt in my father's house

Q 3rd Where were you living when called into service: where have you lived since the Revolutionary War and where do you now live?

A. 3. I lived in Camden district when called into service and moved from thence to this State (of Alabama) and I now live in Alabama.

Q 4th How were you called into service; were you drafted; did you volunteer or were you a substitute, and if in substitute, for whom?

A. 4. I was drafted for 3 months; and after the expiration of that time; I volunteered and served 4 years and 3 months making, 4 years 6 months.

Q 5th State the names of some of the regular officers who were with the troops when you served, such Continental and militia regiments as you can recollect and the general circumstances of your service.

A. 5. I have given all the statements that I am able in my Declaration hereto annexed and merely refer to the same in answer to the question.

Q 6th Did you ever receive a discharge from the service, and if so, by whom was it given and what has become of it?

A. 6. I received a discharge from the service; and got it burned in my father's house.

Q 7th State the names of persons to whom you are known in your present neighborhood and who can testify as to your character for veracity and their belief in your services as a soldier in the Revolution.

A. 7. Edward Chitty and Asa Dean can testify as to my character for veracity and their belief in my service as a soldier of the Revolution.

Personally appeared in open court John Lucas who after being duly sworn according to law deposeth and saith that he has carefully examined the foregoing Declaration of the applicant Randolph Lucas for a pension; and believes the same to be correct and true; and that he served as he states.

Note: On January 9, 1854 at Russell County Alabama, Nancy Lucas, 75, filed for a widow's pension as the widow of Randolph Lucas; a pensioner for his services in the revolution; that she married him June 1, 1797; that he died September 15, 1839; that she has no public or private record of her marriage; that she remains his widow.

The widow's maiden name was Nancy Ray; she and Randolph Lucas were married in Barnwell District South Carolina; in another filing she states that her father was killed in "one of the last battles of the war" when she was one year old; in 1855 when she applied for her bounty land entitlement she was living in Covington County Alabama and in 1858 she was a resident of Walton County Florida; there is a reference in the file to and on unnamed daughter who was born in 1797; there is also reference to the widow having 4 children living in 1854 together with several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; none of the children, grandchildren all or great-grandchildren are named in any of the documents in this file.
