Abner Guthrie was born about 1782 in Halifax Co., North Carolina, according to his U. S. Army enlistment record.

He moved to Warren Co., Georgia sometime before 1812.

On 26 June 1812, in Warren Co., Georgia, he enlisted in the U.S. Army 2nd Artillery for five years under General Pinckney. The troops went to Point Peter, Georgia (present day Camden Co.). He served as an Orderly Sergeant in Capt. Jesse Robinson’s company of the 2nd Regiment, US Artillery, commanded sometimes by Col. Patrick Jack, United State Infantry, 8th Regiment. A farmer, he was 36 years old, 5' 11" with grey eyes, brown hair, and a fair complexion

While in the service, about 13 Aug 1812, he became disabled by hitting his right leg against a piece of timber. He was placed in the hospital at Point Peter, then transferred to Savannah, Georgia. He was transferred from Captain Robinson’s company to Captain Donoho’s of the 1st Regiment of the U.S. Artillery. He was certified unfit for service in November or December of 1815, and honorably discharged at the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina by Lieut. Col. William Lindsey.

He filed for Invalid Pension in 1819 or 1820, which was rejected. He filed again in December of 1850 (application #14665) from Pulaski Co., Kentucky. He said that he had been able to support himself since his wound by the charity of his friends and at times reduced to a very stunted subsistence in the lowest degree of object poverty. His pension was once again rejected.

On 21 May 1827, he won land in the lottery in Section 1, District 30, Lot 236 in Lee County, Georgia (Warrant No. 23997).
