Small comfort it is for bereaved parents when they receive messages of sympathy from commanding officers as final word is sent verifying the fact that a son has paid the supreme sacrifice. It is beyond the power of any official to do more in a time of war. Mrs. Anna Sammons of Tracy received a letter from her son, Pvt. Leslie Sammons, stationed on Luzon, P. I., giving her the comforting assurance that he had found the grave of his brother, John Henry Sammons, who lost his life after the invasion of the Philippine Islands. In connection with the letter, Leslie sent a five stanza poem he had written entitled "A Bare White Cross," which he dedicated to the memory of his brother, other sons, husbands and brothers of countless families in the country.

On 4/13/2018 looking at the date of Johnnie's burial in Manila #2, February 15, 1946 and Les' military discharge records I could see that he was outside the USA from October 1945 to July 13, 1946. So sometime between February 15 and July 13, Les visited Manila #2 Cemetery three times and on the last visit located Johnnie's grave.
