Ebenezer Hilton or Anson, age 83, provides the following testimony in 1836.

"they both enlisted as minute men in the service of the United States the first of March 1775 and were mustered at Wiscasset or Woolwich in this State three times a week till the eighth day of June 1775 when they both enlisted for eight months in the company commanded by Capt. Samuel McCobb that Abner Wade who was a sergeant in said company was then enlisting officer: that they both marched on the twelfth day of June 1775 from Wiscasset for Boston with Capt. McCobbs company, which was the first Company that crossed the Kennebec river from the east, in defense of the county at the commencement of the war; that they arrived at Portsmouth NH on the day of the battle on Bunker Hill. That they heard of the battle when they arrived at Newburyport and that they did not let grass grow under their feet till they arrived at Mystic near Boston on the twentieth day of June 1775; they then served out the full term of the enlistment under Capt. McCobb in Col. Nixons Regiment of the Massachusetts Corps: that he and said Lemuel Williams belonged to the same mess, that he took care of said William and two others by request of the surgeon while they were sick on Prospect Hill that in Sept of that year they were detached with others in the expedition to go to Quebec under Genl Arnold marched as far as Fort Western on Kennebec river; where they were detained some time and Capt. McCobbs company were ordered to return on account of the scarcity of provisions and did return to Winter Hill; that he was allowed to go home on furlough in October and afterwards joined the army and served out his term and that said Lemuel Williams also served out his term; that in January 1776 said Williams again enlisted for one year as a sergeant and served out that enlistment in Col. Hitchcock's Regiment of the Massachusetts troops; that he is not able to say in what company as this deponent did not himself enlist that year: that he knows said Williams enlisted; knows that he left home to join the army and knows that he wrote letters home and gave information that he was in the Battle of New York and that he returned home in Feb 1777; that he was appointed a Leutenent in the early part of the year 1777 and served during that year and part of the year 1778 in Capt. John Wiley's company in Col. Michael Jackson's Regiment of the Massachusetts troops; that he came home on furlough in 1778 and as near as I can recollect (he at his own request) was discharged in June 1778 but that he is not certain that said Willliams obtained his discharge till some monthes after.”

His widow testifies he is a sergeant in Tew's Co., receives a Lieutenant commission in January 1777, "... appointed a Lieutenant with enlisting orders came home to Woolwich where he enlisted a number of men ... he received orders unexpectedly to join the army at Boston with his men ... marched ... the first day of May 1777 ..." The widow also says they were married before he left. A very interesting side note – Lemuel named a son Moral presumably after Moral Hilton, a man he served with.
