homas Carroll 1st (captain of the hold) ~ b. 1833 in Boston, MA; 5'6-1/2", blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion; enlisted 7/22/1861; transferred from the Sabine to the Monitor 2/24/1862, ship's no. 19; survived the sinking of the ironclad on 12/31/1862 and was among those who signed a petition, dated aboard the Rhode Island, at sea, 1/3/1863, requesting that "we may be discharged from further service in the Navy of the United States, and be privileged to serve our country in whatever capacity may seem best."; d. 10/11/1905 in Antioch, TX. Pension Files show he served on USS Sabine, Ohio, Monitor, Niphon, North Carolina, Minnesota, Atlanta, and Princeton.
