John Jay (J. J.) McCann


P

rominent Nashville miller and flour merchant. Son of J. R. McCann and Ann Carter, and husband of Juliet Lenora Chamberlain, the daughter of Dr. Daniel C. Chamberlain and Mary Garrett, whom he married in 1855. During the Civil War, Maj. J. J. McCann was an officer in the Confederate army. After the war, he served on the Nashville board of education and was also elected a member of the Nashville city council. He was later elected as a member of the TN state senate and was serving a term as a Davidson Co. trustee at the time of his death. The John J. McCann School, of Nashville, was named in his honor. Children: Fannie, William (Willie), and Daisy (adopted).
