. M. Wallace was a prominent merchant in Maryville, TN, and later in Dalton and Atlanta, GA. He was the eldest son of Gen. Wm. Wallace (1794-1864) and Margaret Chamberlain (1792-1844), of Blount Co., TN. and the husband of both Octavia Adelaide Cox (1825-1852) and Frances Garland (Fannie) Singleton (1834-1907). Wallace was educated at Maryville College, in Blount Co., TN. Around 1847, he relocated to Dalton, GA, and in 1855, he moved on to Atlanta, in Fulton Co. At the onset of the Civil War, he became an ardent secessionist, raising troops and serving as an officer for the Confederacy. In 1885, he was appointed surveyor of customs for the port of Atlanta by President Grover Cleveland. He was the father of thirteen children.
