Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War; Lawyer; was elected to the Tennessee State Legislature; General in the Confederate States Army; president of the Tennessee and Pacific Railroad; elected to the Tennessee state senate; U.S. ambassador to Columbia, Bolivia, Uruguay and Paraguay. Buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.
