Second Lieutenant Maurice Arthur Vikse died as a result of the crash of his P-38J fighter plane over France on 22 January 1945. He had to abort his assigned escort mission for a bomber sortie due to engine problems of his fighter plane.

Second Lieutenant Maurice Arthur Vikse was interred at the Epinal American Cemetery in France. He is also memorialized at the Los Molinos Cemetery, California. His initial Service Number was 19040999. After officer training, his Service Number was O-773897.
