Thomas GIBBS, was born 27 JAN 1746 in Greenwich, Hampshire Co, MA.(1, 2,3) Thomas was the first child and first son of Abraham and Keziah (Atwood) GIBBS.

At the age of 30, Thomas served as a Sergeant in Tim Bedel's -1st N. H. Regiment. He registered for service in the 1776, 1st New Hampshire from Chesterfield, VT. The 1st N.H. Regiment was rolled into the Northern Continental Army, and these boys were assigned to Carlisle's Company, Bedel's Regiment and Poor's Brigade. During their first year they march North ? first to Fort Ticonderoga, then on to Fort St. John's and then to a place called "Les Ceders" near Ile de Montréal, Québec, Canada.

The Battle of the Cedars is considered a disgrace for the patriots, due to Major Isaac Butterfield's capitulation of his garrison to Captain Forester's flag. Four of Seven Gibbs boys were taken prisoner. General Benedict Arnold arranged for their release ? under a forced cartel of Prisoner Exchange. The cartel was later ruled by the Continental Congress to be null & void, after an Investigation conducted by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Harrison, Samuel Adams and Thomas Lynch. Isaac Butterfield, Tim Bedel were Court Marshaled. Isaac Butterfield was relieved of his command and set home a disgrace. Tim Bedel was rebuked and a year later was allowed to continue as a soldier, with reduced rank.

It was my understanding that Joshua Gibbs gave testimony to the committee ? and through the "Freedom of Information Act," I gained a hard copy of this Committee's report. All I could find was a Muster Roll Call of the prisoners released to General Arnold. There are several accounts of the time held captive by the British. These "War Crimes" as Jefferson reported included the burning at the stake of live soldiers, the murder of one soldier trying to escape and the deliberate infection of troops with small pox. The Mohawks were allowed to pillage and plundered the personal goods of these soldiers. U.S. forces continued to request of the British that Capt. Forester or person responsible for these murders be turned over and tried for war crimes.

From all my research, I do not find that Thomas continues in battle, and it has been assumed that he returned to his wife and children. This is still an unknown area of research. Where was home? He enlisted at Chesterfield, NH.

After the war Thomas resettled to the village of St. Albans, VT in 1786. Thomas is considered one of the towns' founders. He along with 2 other Gibbs boys were enumerated in the first Federal census of the State of Vermont in 1791. Isaac Gibbs and Joshua Gibbs. I have Isaac documented as the 3rd son of Abraham. Also in the area is another assumed brother David?

Isaac, David and Joshua continued the fight and were at the two battles near Saratoga, the battle of Hubbardton and wintered over at Valley Forge. Isaac's line has living descendents in Concord, NH.

Thomas' Rev War pension # is S43598 pulled on 31 Mar 1818 in Franklin Co., VT at 72 years of age. Soldier enlisted at Chesterfield, NH. His son, Joseph in New York, on Apr 29, 1826 moved to Russell, St. Lawrence Co., NY - where he lived with his children until his death in 1828.
