"James Benton "Spook" Coulson was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa. He was the son of Floyd Noe Coulson and Margaret Ione Benton. There were over a dozen children in his family. James graduated from Trinity High School where he was star basketball player. He enlisted in the service in September, 1942.

On November 26, 1944 he was on the crew of the B-17 #42-102565 "The Ugly Duckling" during a mission to bomb the Deulag synthetic oil refinery at Misburg, Germany. Their formation was hit by flak as they passed over Zwolle, Germany. Bursts of hit directly beneath their wing, and they peeled off and left the formation. All the men onboard bailed out, but perished in the ice cold water of the lake below."
